This DIY chalkboard wreath is really simple to make, and would make a perfect first time woodworking project. Circles are extremely easy to cut with a jigsaw, in fact, cutting and painting this project took less than an hour. That’s a perfect nap time project!
Ok, let’s get started. Here is what you will need to make your own chalkboard wreath.
Supplies
MDF – medium-density fibre board
Pencil
Large circular objects as guides – I used a large serving platter and a medium sized bowl
Drill with large wood bit
Jigsaw
Clamps
Protective Eyewear
Handheld mouse sander or sandpaper
Plaid chalkboard paint
Chalk
Step 1: Use a pencil to trace a wreath shape onto your piece of MDF. Keep your shape close to the edge of the wood, because it’s easier to cut in from the side with the jigsaw.
Step 2: Secure MDF to work table using clamps.
Step 3: Drill a starter hole just inside the inner circle using a large wood bit.
Step 4: Place jigsaw blade in starter hole and cut inner circle out by guiding jigsaw along the pencil drawn circle.
Step 5: Start jigsaw on outside edge of MDF closest to outer circle and cut in, then follow pencil drawn outer circle with jigsaw.
Step 6: Use a mouse sander or sandpaper to smooth rough edges, use baby wipes or wet paper towel to wipe off any sawdust.
Step 7: Roll or brush on 2-3 coats of chalkboard paint, letting each coat dry in between. Chalkboard paint dries quickly, so this part goes pretty fast.
Step 8: Let chalkboard paint dry completely. I left mine overnight.
Step 9: Rub a piece of chalk all over the wreath, then wipe clean with damp cloth. This preps the chalkboard paint for writing.
Since the 4th of July is coming up, I drew a flag on ours. Then, I used two Command picture hanging strips to mount the wreath on the front door.
I LOVE our new chalkboard wreath! It was so easy to make. I highly recommend buying a jigsaw. They are very inexpensive and versatile. I purchased a Ryobi jigsaw for around $25 and have already used it for several projects.
