I’m so excited to share my recipe for homemade granite cleaner. It’s really the best granite cleaner I have ever used! We have a large granite island that is constantly being used and I wipe it down many, many times a day. It’s my one spot in the house that must be free of clutter or it makes me a little crazy.
I went through bottles and bottles of expensive cleaner and they all left cloudy residue and streaks. This homemade granite cleaner is better than any store bought I have ever tried. It leaves the granite so shiny! It’s inexpensive to make and you probably have everything you need on hand.
Homemade Granite Cleaner
1/4 teaspoon of liquid dish soap
1/4 cup of rubbing alcohol
2 1/2 cups of waterI recycled an empty spray bottle from my cleaning stash, and removed the label residue with my homemade goo gone recipe. Â I added a chalkboard label I cut from chalkboard contact paper, just like the ones I made for my frozen cookie dough gifts.

My granite countertops are already hazy. Will this take the haze away?
Melissa
I don’t think it would hurt to try!

I was just getting to the end of a bottle of some of the expensive stuff and was thinking there must be a better way to clean granite. Thanks so much for sharing. I love the chalkboard label too!

So smart, I’ll have to make this to protect/clean our marble counters!
Chris
Works great but you MUST remember you STILL need to seal your granite every 6 months or so
Lee
I have brand new granite counter tops and have no idea what I’m doing with them. I look forward to trying the cleaner. But what do you mean you need to seal your granite every 6 months or so? How do I do that????

Works great! Thanks.

Great idea. Thanks for sharing. Is this enough alcohol to kill bacteria?
paula
works great on my granite counters..thanks for posting this

Just made this and it works! Thank you so much. And from a microbial standpoint, the alcohol and dish detergent (and of course the wiping motion!)are enough to disrupt cell membranes which is what an antibacterial component in a cleaning product is doing.

Given the cost of granite cleaner at the store, this could save a fortune!

is it ok for Silestone?

I just made some today and my counters look beautiful, no streaks either.

Do you use a dry or wet cloth to wipe it down with?

What % Alcohol do you use? And is isopropyl alcohol the same as rubbing alcohol?

I’ve always just used whatever I grab at the store and it has all worked just fine. Right now I have isopropyl alcohol 70%. Hope that helps!
Michele
Yes that does help, it’s what I have too. Thank you for getting back to me so fast. I can’t wait to try it 🙂

My friend installs granite & this is his recipe. He advises using dawn dish washing detergent. I’ll never buy store bought again.
Mary Lou
Great idea – could this be used on sealed marble countertops. Thanks!
Lori
Wonder if it works on stainless steel too? I’ll try it on both
wendy
can i use this on marbel countertops
Melissa
I don’t have marble, but this mixture is extremely gentle. You can always check with your manufacturer.

Does it matter what type of dish soap you use? For example, are there any ingredients in dish soap that you need to make sure to avoid?
Thanks
Melissa
I don’t think it matters! I just use whatever is on sale:0)
Jami
thank you so much, my dish soap is scented with citrus, and I know you are supposed to stay away from citrus. But because the quantity is so low will that be a problem? What about adding citrus essential oils to help with the alcohol smell?
thanks!
Brenda
I have been using onguard and lemon on my granite for months and love it. I use a 32 oz. spray bottle with water, 10 drops ea. of the oils.
kimberly
I have read online that using dish soap will cause your counters to lose their shine over the years. What is your experience?
Melissa
I’ve been using this mixture for almost three years now and have not noticed any dulling.
Myrie
Thank You for this Great Post!
Tried it … Loved it … Shared it :0)

I always tell people that they dont have to buy the expensive cleaners. Make your own and it works just as good. Great share!

I’ve had granite countertops for seven years and have never been happy with how they look after I clean them. They never shined even though I used expensive cleaners. Anyway, I found this article today and went to Home Depot to buy some micro fiber cloths and a spray bottle. I just finished cleaning all my granite countertops with your recipe and they look ten times better than any product I bought from BB&B! Incredible that something so cheap and easy can be better than what you get at the store. Afterward I took the damp cloth and did a quick wipe down all my stainless steel appliances and they look great too! Thank you.

I made this a few days ago because I was going through SO much of that expensive stuff and basically throwing my money away. I wipe down counters all day long and let me tell you…this works just as well as the pricey store-bought version! I’m thrilled! Thanks so much! Love your site!
