Our son’s room is in need of a colorful update, so I was thrilled when I was given the chance to work with Glidden paint to update a room in our house. He just got a new set of bunk beds, so it’s the perfect time to start fresh. Since paint is the easiest and most affordable way to make a dramatic change in a room, that is where we decided to begin our update!
I started by clearing everything out, including the bedding, so I could have a clean slate to visualize. My little guy is 7 1/2, so we are definitely ready to leave any nursery decor behind and head straight for bold and fun. His favorite color is yellow, so that is a jumping off point. However, I wasn’t sure if using that color on the walls would work for his room.
Enter My Colortopia! Glidden’s My Colortopia site is truly amazing. It will guide you through the process of picking a color you love and will be thrilled to have in your home. The best part is, you can see it all laid out before you start, so you can feel confident in your choice. With the Color My Room tool, you upload a picture of your room, like the one I have here, and virtually paint the walls to see how the room would look in that color.
It’s a really wonderful tool, especially if you aren’t sure about a adding color to a neutral room. Let me show you how easy it was to visualize a big change in my son’s room using the tools from My Colortopia.
Start with an inspiration picture and upload it to My Image Inspiration. This is where you will pull your color palette from. You can use your own picture, like the one of my son’s shoes below, or use any other picture you like. Glidden even has inspiration pictures you can choose from on their site. Inspiration Picture Number One: This picture I took of my little guy’s favorite pair of shoes. I love the fresh color combination of green, yellow and white.
After you upload your image, you select a portion of the image and get suggested color palettes. The really great thing about Glidden is they offer a simplified palette, so you don’t have to agonize over endless shades of the same color. It really makes it so much easier to select a color and move on to adding the color to your room!
Inspiration Picture Number Two: We also love the pretty blue and yellow tones in this image on My Colortopia.
I saved all the color palettes we liked to my projects folder, which is in the right hand corner of the page, and prepared to paint my virtual room! Upload your image to the Color My Room tool, and use the area selector to mark off the area to be painted, as well as the paint-free zones.
After trying a few solid color walls, I took a tip from my friend Jen at Tatertots & Jello, and used the tool to mask off a striped pattern on the walls.
I then painted different color stripes on the walls to see what we liked best. The great thing about the Color My Room tool is that it saves your work. You don’t have to upload another image and redo the stripes every time, just go to my saved pics and select your image again to try on a new color.
I think we have it narrowed down to two colors. We like the yellow stripes, but the dark dark green and the navy blue were our favorites! Note: The stripes would be green/white or blue/white. They are tan in these pictures because the wall is tan in the orginal picture.
I like the green because it is different, and very on trend right now. It’s also my son’s second favorite color, and would pair great with yellow accessories.
But the navy is classic, and looks so great in the room! Both my husband and son really liked the blue stripes when they saw these pictures. Of course, blue will pair wonderfully with yellow as well!
So what do you think? Green stripes, or blue stripes? I would love for you to weigh in on your favorite combo! We are ready to get busy painting!
