DIY Oversized Zinc Letter – Anthropologie Inspired

Oh man, I’m super pumped about my big giant M! I wanted something big and pretty to go on the wall over the bathtub, and this is what I came up with. The best part is I spent less than $3, because I had the supplies on hand! I don’t know if you can tell by the picture, but it’s really big. 3 feet tall, and 2 1/2 feet wide. It’s a statement piece!

I love it! It looks like metal, I’m so thrilled I can’t get over it. Here is how I DIY’ed the look of those rad zinc letters that Anthropologie sells for $98.

I free handed my letter onto a large sheet of mdf. I wanted a more free form artsy feel, but you could easily print off a huge letter {using the tile feature} and use that as your guide.

Then I used my inexpensive little jigsaw to cut out my letter. Yes, I did it myself! It’s super easy.

Here it is, my funky M all cut out. I used my mouse sander to smooth out the edges, and wiped it down. I considered spray painting it, but the rain was rolling in. So I opted to take it indoors.

I picked up a tube of Rub N Buff in silver leaf from Michael’s. I used a coupon so it was under $3. I rubbed it straight onto the raw mdf. I wiped in one direction so it would mimic the grain of metal, and it looks awesome! I can’t wait to hang it in the bathroom and have a big reveal!

Update: The giant “M” is up on the wall and our bathroom makeover is complete!
