I’m unreasonably excited about this simple recipe for homemade Goop Gone. Earlier this week, I was working on a craft project and found myself in desperate need of goo remover. I could not find the bottle I thought we had. Since it was nap time, and I did not want to put my project on hold, I started brainstorming.
I tried vegetable oil, and that was softening the leftover label, but I needed something abrasive. So, I grabbed the baking soda and made a thick paste with the vegetable oil. It worked perfectly.
Homemade Goop Gone
1 part vegetable oil
2 parts baking soda
Stir together until paste is formed. Then, use a paper towel or your fingers to apply. Work the mixture into the residue until it releases from the surface.Wash off with soap and warm water.
I was prepping my surface for paint, so I used rubbing alcohol to clean any oil residue left behind.
That’s it, just wanted to pop in and share this quick idea. We may in fact have goo remover in the house, but I can never find it when I need it. I love the homemade version because I always know where those ingredients are!

What a great idea! Pinning for future reference!
Woah!!! Awesome! Thanks so much for sharing! I hate the smell of the actual stuff so this is great
Brilliant! I used glue dots in jam jars for votive candles, and didn’t want to use chemicals to remove the residue before reusing them for jam. I also hate the smell! This worked perfectly! Green, economical and clever! You also have the best cookie recipes in the whole internet universe, but my pants don’t fit anymore because of cookies in mugs!!!
Totally genius! My dad’s always buying this stuff anyway, so yay for saving money!
how inventive are you? and you made the jar so cute too – rock on girlie!
Love it! I’m excited to see what project you were prepping!?!?!?!

I love this idea! How long has it lasted you in your container?
Thanks Lisa! Mine is still fine and I’ve had it in my container for about 2 months now.

I will definitely be making this up. I use baking soda to clean my granite countertop. It does not have the chemicals a purchased cleaner does. Sprinkle baking soda on the top and scrub with a wet cloth. Works beautifully!
Would this work with Canola oil?? I don’t know what the basic dfference is between the two! I would love to make this up, I hate goo gone and because of that I never have any in my house.
Canola oil will work perfectly!
That’s so easy! Who would’ve thought!?
I have been using baby oil as goo gone for a couple of years now. The trouble I had was that it spread all over. I never thought to add it to baking soda! Thanks so much for the tip!
I just Lund your Ite love your granite cleaner &homemade goo-gone… I can not use the “real”goo gone as it makes my heart have xtra pppitations &i get hyper smelling it? Makes you wonder? But yours is ALL natural.THANKS. Looking reward to more cool things from you.

It’s called washi tape. You can buy it on Etsy, or Michael’s has started carrying it as well in the Reflections scrapbook line. They call it decorative tape. It’s like really thin masking tape and you can use it for so many things! I love it!
I made this today and loved how easy it was to clean my jars I am going to use for bath salts ( Christmas gifts ). Thanks for the recipe! I’m posting this one to Pinterest!
I can never find my bottle of goo gone either! Baking Soda and Oil I can find. Thanks
Followed a link from another blogger who shared your recipe on “Hometalk.” It’s quite popular b/c it made a top 10 award there!!
I can’t wait to try to make this….certainly must be cheaper than Goo Gone.
