Chalkboard Christmas Ornament

Chalkboard Christmas Ornament

When two of my very favorite bloggers – Holly and Nat from My Sister’s Suitcase – asked me to be a part of their 12 Days of Christmas series, I quickly said yes. These girls have really wonderful and creative ideas, and this series is one of them!

Twelve bloggers are creating crafts inspired by the 12 Days of Christmas lyrics. I chose “Four calling birds”, and was surprised to learn that the original lyric was actually “colly birds”, which referred to blackbirds. I was inspired by this little bit of trivia to incorporate the color black into my project. Since I love chalkboard crafts, I thought it would be fun to make a chalkboard Christmas ornament.

Here is what you will need:

Glass Christmas Ornament

Chalkboard Acrylic Craft Paint

Paint Brush

Rubbing Alcohol

Chalk

Chalk Ink Marker

Paper plate or cardboard box to hold ornament while painting

Step One: Gather supplies and remove metal top from bulb.

Step Two: Clean bulb with rubbing alcohol.

Step Three: Paint bulb with one coat of chalkboard paint. You may find it helpful to create a stand to hold the ornament while you paint. I turned a paper plate upside down, cut a small hole in it, and pushed the top of the bulb in the hole. That way it wasn’t rolling around.

Step Four: Paint another coat of chalkboard paint. Once that is dry, remove the bulb from the stand and paint the top.

Step Five: Let bulb dry 24 hours, then cure by rubbing a piece of chalk all over chalkboard surface.

Step Six: Wipe clean with damp cloth and personalize using chalk ink pen. I found this fine tip Chalk Ink Marker on Amazon, and I absolutely love it. It works perfectly for these smaller crafts.

If you are feeling frisky, add some pink ribbon.
