This summer, we were looking for a budget friendly way to decorate this large wall. We decided to try our hand at making our own chalkboard paint. So we taped off our area with green Frog Tape painter’s tape {It has a paint block barrier, and it worked flawlessly!} and followed the direction from Martha Stewart using unsanded tile grout and a flat dark gray color paint. We did not sand the wall as instructed in the last step and it was perfect. An action shot of the curing process. The wall had a few tiny pinhead sized lumps where the grout did not mix in completely, but those broke off when we cured the wall. Which took an entire box of white chalk!
We love having it!!! I buy chalk markers from Michael’s {using a coupon of course!} and use regular chalk as well. I usually use a damp washcloth to clean it. The kid’s are free to draw, but after a couple weeks the novelty of that wore off. So I use it most often for photo ops and holiday decorating.
At Christmas we drew a fireplace on it, and hung our stockings using command hooks. And of course, took pictures in front of it!

I so want to do this on that little wall I have! I need to get the paint color name you used.
Love this! We just put a huge one on our wall as well and it’s great.
oh…i LOVE this….i have been wanting to do this for a while now…thanks for the inspiration…xxx
Soooo cool!!! You are so creative!!!
I read in a mag recently if you wanna give your chalkboard wall a new look, you clean it with coca cola!! I guess you soak a rag in it and wipe it over. Apparently cafe’s do it to re-freshen up their boards!
Not that I think yours needs that…it’s perfect as it is!!!:)
