I’m so excited to share these Red Velvet Cake Mix Cinnamon Rolls with you today! These are so easy and gorgeous, and are definitely going on my holiday baking must list. For months I’ve wanted to make a red velvet cinnamon roll. When I stumbled across a Duncan Hines recipe for cake mix cinnamon rolls, I had a feeling I was about to make Red Velvet Cinnamon Roll magic.Â
Let’s get started.
Combine two packages of active dry yeast with warm water in the bowl of a stand mixer. Stir until dissolved. Add cake mix, flour, vanilla, and salt. Use dough hook attachment to knead dough together, just for a minute or two. Move to larger bowl, cover, and let rise for about an hour. Punch dough down after an hour, and let rise again for another hour. Here is my dough after the second rise. I was giddy over this gorgeous red yeast dough.
Use plenty of flour on a clean surface, and turn dough out. Â Shape into a ball, then roll into a rectangle shape. Mine measured about 28×17.
Spread softened butter over dough.Â
Sprinkle with brown sugar, white granulated sugar, and cinnamon.Â
Start from furthest edge and roll dough tightly into a long skinny log, trying to keep it neat and even. I like to trim off the uneven edges.Â
Slice log evenly into 24 rolls. Place rolls in two greased 9×13 baking pans. Cover with plastic wrap and let cinnamon rolls rise a final time in the pan, about 30 minutes, or until they have doubled in size.Â
Bake at 350 degrees for 15- 20 minutes.Â
I made a cream cheese frosting to go over the top. It’s decadent and delicious on these beautiful Red Velvet Cinnamon Rolls. Spread it on while the rolls are still warm.Â
If you are a first time cinnamon roll maker, or if you haven’t used yeast before, this would be a great recipe to start with. The dough is simple and easy to work with.Â
Red Velvet Cake Mix Cinnamon Rolls
adapted from Duncan Hines Cake Mix Cinnamon Rolls
These take about 3 hours from start to finish, mostly inactive prep time.
Makes 24 rolls
1 box of Duncan Hines Signature Red Velvet Cake Mix
2 envelopes of Active Dry Yeast
2 1/2 cups of warm waterÂ
1 teaspoon of kosher salt
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
5 cups of all-purpose flour
Cinnamon Filling
1 stick of softened butter – you can add another stick of butter if you want them really gooey
1 cup of packed dark brown sugar
1 cup of granulated white sugar
Cinnamon
Cream Cheese Frosting
2 sticks of softened butter
3 cups of powdered sugar
1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract
Pinch of kosher salt
2 packages of softened cream cheese – 8 ounces
Combine two packages of active dry yeast with warm water in the bowl of a stand mixer. Stir until dissolved. Add cake mix, flour, vanilla and salt. Use dough hook attachment to knead dough together, just for a minute or two. Move to larger bowl, cover, and let rise for about an hour. Punch dough down after an hour, and let rise again for another hour.Â
Use plenty of flour on a clean surface and turn dough out. Â Shape into a ball, then roll into a rectangle shape, mine measured about 28×17.Â
Spread softened butter over dough.Â
Sprinkle with brown sugar, white granulated sugar and cinnamon.Â
Start from farthest edge and roll dough tightly into a long skinny log shape. Slice into 24 rolls.Â
Place rolls in two 9×13 pans that have been greased with butter, or sprayed with non stick cooking spray. Bake at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes.Â
While the rolls are baking, prepare cream cheese frosting. With paddle attachment on the stand mixer, combine room temperature butter with powdered sugar. Beat until well combined, then add vanilla and pinch of salt. Mix again, then while mixer is going, drop cubes of softened cream cheese in the bowl one at a time until frosting is well mixed.Â
Spread on warm rolls and enjoy.Â

Is there a way to let them rise over night? Or would that be too long?

This looks delicious! I just shared this recipe on my red velvet blog https://momelite.com/red-velvet-heaven/. I hope you don’t mind!
I made these last night. I am very familiar with using yeast and baking…but these didnt rise very well…Not like when I have used a white or yellow cake mix. The Red Velvet seems to be a lot heavier and more “cakey” This isn’t the first recipe Ive made cinnamon rolls with Red Velvet cake mix and both times seemed to do the same…
