A few weeks ago, my great grandma, Beatrice Barton turned one hundred and one years old. This is Grandma Bea on her birthday, at Dewar’s, a favorite local ice cream parlor. Can you believe she is one hundred and one, and she has five children, sixteen grandchildren, thirty-five great grandchildren and twenty-five great-great grandkids!? (Two more on the way from my extended family!)
Grandma Bea is an excellent cook, and in honor of her birthday, I am sharing her famous cobbler recipe. Here is a step-by-step guide to make Grandma Bea’s Blueberry Cobbler.
Start by preheating your oven to 350, and greasing a 9×13 baking pan using butter or shortening.
Add 1 cup of sugar, 1 1/2 cups of flour, 2 teaspoons of baking powder and 1/4 teaspoon of salt to a large mixing bowl. Whisk to combine dry ingredients.
Add 3 tablespoons of shortening to your dry ingredients, use a pastry cutter to combine shortening into dry ingredients. Flour mixture will resemble soft sand when done. Slowly, add 1 cup of milk and stir to combine.
Your crust batter will be nice and thick, small lumps are ok.
Pour crust mixture into the bottom of a greased 9×13 pan. Add blueberries on top of crust mixture, sprinkle 1 cup of sugar over the blueberries, then pour 1 cup of very hot water over sugar. You may need more or less water, leave 1/2 an inch from the top of the pan.
Dot top of cobbler with 2 tablespoons of butter. Place cobbler on a foil lined baking sheet, just in case it bubbles over.
Bake at 350 for 45-60 minutes, until golden brown and bubbly.
Isn’t it lovely? A perfectly summery cobbler.
So yummy with vanilla ice cream.
It tastes even better than it looks, just ask Grandma Bea!

I made this a few days ago and documented the results on my blog (The Hopeful Hestia, https://thehopefulhestia.wordpress.com/2012/06/26/blueberry-cobbler/). I just wanted to stop by and say not only is your blog lovely, BUT THIS RECIPE WAS AWESOME!! I mean, I did make some changes due to the availability of what I had in my house, but I pretty much followed it, and the result was amazing. This will be my “go to” cobbler recipe! btw I saw this post on Pinterest.
That is not a cobbler – it is actually a blueberry pudding cake.
There are chocolate pudding cake recipes that are very similar to this.
My daughters and I made this cobbler tonight. It was amazing! Taste just like cobbler I had years ago at a restaurant and never forgot! Perfection. We used blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries, also, I saw this on Pinterest. Thank you for sharing 🙂
Just made this cobbler for a Church event this evening and I can not wait to taste it! Excited!!!
Yum that looks delicious. I love blueberries!
Melissa,
What a sweet Grandma and a sweet story! Thanks so much for sharing with us at the Holiday Heirloom Recipe Collection Party! I just love hearing about family traditions that have been passed down and have such meaning to them…
The cobbler looks absolutely DIVINE!!!
This looks amazing and so yummy! We still have blueberries frozen from this summer. I think I need to make this! Happy Birthday Grandma Be a!
Looks gorgeous. Wonder if you could reduce the sugar a bit as I like quite tart things, especially if I add ice cream to the serving. I have some gooseberries to use, and they are purple, not green, but they will need a fair bit of sugar. Wonder what blueberries and gooseberries would be like together? I have made raspberry and nectarine cobbler and strawberry and nectarine.
Saw this recipe on Pinterest and have it in the oven as we speak (used mixed berries cause that’s what I had. So Dewars huh? Must be in Bakersfield where I grew up! (I live in Montana now!) My brother sends me the peanut butter taffy at Christmas every year. Hope your Grandma is still around and doin’ well in 2014?
Thanks for the comment, Denise! Great to hear from a Bakersfield native!
Grandma Bea passed away last April at the wonderful age of 102. Thank you for asking! <3
