Homemade Taco Seasoning
Homemade taco seasoning is so easy to make, you’ll never need a store bought package again. The great thing about using your own taco seasoning recipe is that you can control the level of sodium and spice, and really make it your own.
Taco Seasoning Recipe
Growing up, my family used the taco seasoning packages, but my husband’s family always seasoned their taco meat with spices from their pantry. Over the years, I started doing the same because my mother-in-law’s tacos were always so delicious! Now we use our own homemade taco seasoning recipe, and about a year ago I felt like I really perfected it by adding a little beef broth and cornstarch to keep the taco meat moist without being runny. It’s the perfect homemade taco seasoning.
How to Make Taco Seasoning
It’s so easy to make your own taco seasoning. It’s a simple combination of kosher salt, ground black pepper, chili powder, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder and cumin. This recipe is for one pound of ground beef, but you can multiply the recipe and keep the spices in an airtight container in the pantry.
The beef broth and cornstarch are optional, but they are GREAT for keeping the meat flavorful and moist. This is perfect when you are using lean ground beef or turkey. If you are using turkey, try substituting chicken broth for beef broth.
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 2 teaspoons chili powder
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon cumin
- 2 teaspoons cornstarch
- 2/3 cup low sodium beef broth
- 1 pound extra lean ground beef
In a small bowl, combine salt, pepper, chili powder, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cumin and cornstarch.
Place frozen ground beef in Instant Pot, add beef broth and top with seasoning mix. Lock lid in place making sure pressure release valve is set to sealing. Set Instant Pot to High Pressure for 20 minutes via manual mode.
Once Instant Pot has counted down from 20 minutes, turn valve to quick pressure release.
Using a wooden spoon or a ground meat chopper, break up cooked ground beef.
