Tinned Fish and Creme Fraiche Appetizer – the perfect way to serve any tinned fish as a snack or at a party!

Tinned Fish and Creme Fraiche Appetizer
A crispy kettle-style potato chip topped with rich and creamy creme fraiche and a salty bite of tinned fish. Add a sprinkle of fresh chives for a fresh herb finish. Tinned fish has been trending, and everyone wants to try it, so it’s great for parties as an appetizer and discussion starter.

Ingredients for Tinned Fish and Creme Fraiche Appetizer
- Tinned Fish – my favorite is the Fishwife Smoked Salmon with Sichuan Chili Crisp. See below for more recommendations.
- Creme Fraiche
- Kettle Chips – or plain Potato Chips
- Fresh Chives

Which Tinned Fish To Try
I like the Fishwife brand, and this may be controversial, but I prefer to serve tuna, salmon, and smoked trout versus sardines or anchovies. We started out serving a wide array of varieties of tinned fish at parties, and the sardines and anchovies were hardly touched. So I’m listing a few crowd pleasers that have gone over well. But the beauty of this appetizer is that it works with any tinned fish, or even smoked salmon.
- Fishwife Smoked Salmon with Sichuan Chili Crisp – this is the one pictured, and it’s always a hit. So tasty!
- Fishwife Albacore Tuna in Spicy Olive Oil – we recently found these at Costco, and they are so good with a great Costco price. They make great sandwiches, or tuna melts, too!
- Fishwife Smoked Rainbow Trout – all of these smoked tinned fish are great with this appetizer.
- Fishwife Albacore Tuna with Spanish Lemon

How to Serve Tinned Fish and Creme Fraiche Appetizer
Arrange bowls and plates with chips, tinned fish, creme fraiche, and minced chives. I use a collection of small vintage plates and bowls, including a vintage sardine fork. It’s a great conversation starter, too.
For a snack or small party, use one variety of tinned fish like the smoked salmon shown above. Offer a variety for a larger party or a fun tasting menu.
